World Athletics U-20 Championship: India’s First Medal In Race Walk Event As Amit Khatri Wins Silver!

The year 2021 is proving a golden year for Indian athletics. After a successful Olympics in Tokyo where Neeraj Chopra brought India’s first medal in athletics at the Olympics. Chopra made the whole nation proud by winning the gold medal in the Javelin throw. Now, Amit Khatri has won a silver medal in the men’s 10,000 m race walk. 

The whole nation cheered up as the news of Amit Khatri winning silver spread as he is the only athlete from India to win a medal at race walk event. Amit took a time of 42 minutes 17.94 secs to finish 10,000m men race walk at second position at World Athletics U20 Championships. 

The event took place in Nairobi. The key fact is that the difference between the gold medal-winning athlete, Heristone Wanyonyi of Kenya, and Amit Khatri of India was just 7 seconds. Histone took 42 minutes 10.84 secs. Though Amit led the whole race in the first place that is for a large portion of the race the Indian youngster was leading the spot but Wanyonyi overtook Amit in the penultimate lap. Paul McGrath of Spain took home the bronze medal. The Spanish athlete finished the race with 42:26.11.

Amit who is just 17 years old had set a new national record in U-20 in a 10km walking race. He made the record earlier this year when he won the title at the 18th National Federation Cup. He topped the list with a time of 40:40.97.

When Amit was asked about his feeling after finishing with the silver medal, he said that the race was tough as due to high altitude breathing was a problem. He said that it was his first international competition and he is really feeling proud that he has won a medal for the nation. He added that by winning a silver medal he hasn’t disappointed the nation and has fulfilled their dreams and has enlightened the country’s hope. It was not only AFI who wished Amit after his success, India’s flying girl Peeti Usha also retweeted AFI’s tweet on Amit and congratulated the youngster for his success.

Athletics Federation Of India retweeted both P.T Usha’s and Neeraj’s tweets on Amit Khatri historic medal. 

This is the first time that an Indian has won a medal in race walking and is also the first time that the country has won two medals in a single edition of the event. The mixed 4x400m Indian relay team had won the bronze medal earlier this week and now Amit has brought a silver medal. 

In the mixed relay race, the Indian quartet of Bharath S, Priya Mohan, Summy, and Kapil had clocked 3 minutes 20.60 seconds to finish third in the final. The Indian quartet was not much behind the quartet that finished second. 

Indian athlete who has already won a medal at World Athletics, Hima Das also congratulated India’s Priya Mohan who missed a medal in the 400m women race by finishing 4th. It was her first international race. Hima wrote that it is just a beginning.

Overall, this is the sixth medal won by an Indian at the World Athletics U20 Championships. Previous winners include Seema Antil, Navjeet Kaur Dhillon, Neeraj Chopra, and Hima Das.
